Syngonium (botanically: Syngonium podophyllum) belongs to the arum family (Araceae) and is originally from the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. In its native habitat, the arrowhead plant climbs up tree trunks. As a houseplant, it forms compact, bushy shoots or elegantly climbs up a moss pole. Common names include Purpurtute, Pfeilkraut, and Pfeilpflanze, all references to the characteristic shape of its leaves.

Particularly interesting: Young syngoniums still have simple, heart-shaped leaves. With increasing age, they develop the typical, multi-lobed arrowhead shape. Some varieties also change their coloring, which makes them real eye-catchers.

Propagating Syngonium – it's that easy

Arrowhead plant can be easily propagated from cuttings. Ideal for sharing with friends or expanding your own collection. To do this, cut a shoot with at least one leaf and one node (leaf axil). You can either place the cutting in a glass of water until roots are visible (approx. 2–4 weeks), or plant it directly into moist, loose substrate. Both methods work reliably.

How big does a Syngonium get?

Depending on the variety and care, Syngoniums grown as houseplants reach a height of 30 to 80 cm. On a moss pole, they can grow significantly larger. Regular pruning keeps the plant compact and bushy.

Is Syngonium poisonous to cats, dogs, or children?

Yes. The Syngonium contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation upon contact with mucous membranes. Therefore, the plant should be placed out of reach of pets and small children. When pruning, we recommend wearing gloves.

How much light does a Syngonium need?

Syngoniums thrive best in a bright to semi-shady location with indirect light. Direct sunlight, especially at midday, will scorch the delicate leaves. Variegated varieties (such as Albo or Aurea) require a little more light to maintain their colors.

What is the difference between Syngonium and Philodendron?
