Philodendron: An Overview of the Tree-Loving Plant
Philodendrons are a fascinating genus from the Arum family (Araceae). These plants originally come from the lush rainforests of Central and South America, where they thrive in humid, shady environments. Today, philodendrons are known worldwide as popular houseplants, appealing with their easy-care nature and decorative leaves.
- The name "Philodendron" comes from Greek: philos (love) and dendron (tree) – hence the German name Baumfreund (tree friend).
- Generally, philodendrons are easy to care for and well-suited for beginners.
- There are over 500 recognized Philodendron species, which differ in appearance, growth habit, and care requirements.
The growth habits of Philodendron
Climbing Philodendrons
In their tropical homeland, climbing philodendrons grow up tree trunks, forming aerial roots to cling on. When grown in our homes, they ideally need a moss pole or trellis as a climbing aid. The better the support, the larger and more robust their leaves will become. Many climbing philodendron species can alternatively be cultivated in hanging baskets, where their long shoots hang down decoratively.
Creeping Philodendrons
Creeping philodendrons spread close to the ground and are among the largest-leaved of the genus. They don't need a moss pole, but rather a wide, shallow pot that offers enough space for their expansive growth habit. Since they grow slower than climbing species, they are particularly popular with collectors.
Bushy Philodendrons
Bushy philodendrons grow self-supporting and compact, without the need for a climbing aid. They are particularly suitable for larger rooms, where their densely feathered, deeply incised leaves act as an eye-catcher. As they tend to grow wider than taller, sufficient space should be planned for their development.
Philodendron species
The variety of Philodendron species is impressive, especially in their leaf shapes. These range from heart-shaped to deeply lobed, arrow-shaped, or almost sculptural. Typically, the leaves are rich green and glossy, but many Philodendron species show far more than just classic green. Some delight with different shades of green, from deep dark emerald to delicate light green. Others come in variegated forms, where green, white, and cream blend into one another. Some Philodendron species even surprise with unusual colors like rose or pink.
Popular Philodendron species include:
- Philodendron scandens: Classic climber with heart-shaped leaves, ideal as a hanging plant or on a moss pole
- Philodendron heterocraspedon: Rare species with an unusual leaf shape, particularly sought after by collectors
- Philodendron gloriosum: Creeping species with large, velvety leaves and striking white veins
- Philodendron hederaceum: Also known as the Heartleaf Philodendron, particularly easy to care for and ideal for beginners
- Philodendron Pink Galaxy: Highly sought-after rarity with pink and whitish patterned leaves
- Philodendron melanochrysum: Climbing species with velvety dark green leaves and shimmering gold veins
- Philodendron verrucosum: Striking collector's plant with velvety leaves and distinctly hairy petioles
Philodendron as a beginner plant
Many Philodendron species are easy to care for and suitable for plant beginners. If you want to buy a Philodendron, you should still be aware of a few basic care principles. Most of the time, these can be ensured with just a few simple steps.
-
Light: Philodendrons prefer bright, indirect light conditions. They should not be exposed to direct sunlight, as this can lead to leaf burn. A location near a bright window with slightly filtered light is ideal. They also tolerate semi-shade or shade well. However, growth may be somewhat slower there.
-
Moisture: Water your Philodendron moderately, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings to prevent root rot. Moderate humidity is appreciated, and occasional misting of the leaves can be helpful.
-
Temperature: Maintain room temperature between 18°C and 24°C. Philodendrons are sensitive to sudden temperature fluctuations and cold drafts.
-
Fertilization: During the growing season (spring and summer), fertilize your Philodendron approximately every 4-6 weeks with a balanced, liquid houseplant fertilizer. In winter, when growth is slower, reduce or cease fertilization.
-
Repotting: Philodendrons do not need to be repotted often. However, if your plant outgrows its pot or the roots protrude from the pot, it's time for a larger container with fresh potting soil.
- Cleaning: Occasionally wiping the leaves with a damp cloth helps remove dust and keep the leaf pores clear, allowing them to breathe better.

Important information regarding the Philodendron
Although philodendrons are beautiful and easy-care houseplants, it is important to know that they can be toxic to cats, dogs and other pets. The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation and inflammation of the mucous membranes in the mouth and digestive tract if ingested. To ensure the safety of your pets, place philodendrons out of their reach. If you notice that your pet has nibbled on the leaves, seek veterinary attention immediately. With proper placement and caution, you can enjoy the beauty of philodendrons without endangering the health of your beloved pets.
