Nodes

What are nodes?

Nodes (German term: Blattknoten) are the points on the plant stem where leaves, lateral shoots, buds, or aerial roots emerge from the stem. They are recognizable as a slight thickening or bulge on the stem and are distinctly set apart from the smooth sections between two nodes. At the nodes, the stem is thickened in a ring shape, and the surface feels rougher than the rest of the stem. In many houseplants, a visible scar from a fallen or cut leaf also shows there.

Nodes vs. Internodes

The sections between two nodes are called internodes. The interaction of both structures largely determines how a plant looks. While actual growth occurs at the nodes, the internodes lengthen, giving the plant its length and shape. Short internodes mean compact, densely leaved growth. Long internodes often develop due to lack of light, as the plant tries to quickly reach more light. This process is called etiolation. The plant extends its internodes, the distances between the leaves become larger, and the stem appears thin and unstable. A clear sign that the plant is in too little light.

Function of Nodes

Nodes are the most active parts of a plant and take on several crucial tasks at once. New shoots emerge at the nodes, the plant branches here, and water and nutrients flow into the leaves here.

  • Branching points: New lateral shoots sprout from the axillary buds at the nodes. This is how the plant branches and develops its characteristic shape.
  • Growth regulation: The nodes control how and where new shoots emerge. If a main shoot is cut, the buds on the underlying nodes activate.
  • Transport: The plant's vascular bundles run through the nodes. Water and nutrients flow from the stem into the leaves and shoots here.

Recognizing and Utilizing Nodes

Anyone who wants to propagate plants or encourage bushier growth should know where the nodes are and how to recognize them. A node is the slightly thickened, often somewhat rougher-feeling spot on the stem where a leaf attaches or once attached. In Monstera and Philodendron, you often see a small scar or an aerial root attachment there. This is exactly where the potential for new growth lies.

Branching

If you want a plant to branch more, you can cut it just above a node. The axillary bud located there will then sprout and form a new lateral shoot. The lower on the stem the cut is made, the more compact and bushy the plant will develop.

Propagation

For propagation, the cut should be made below a node so that the cutting still contains at least one intact node. In most houseplants, propagation without nodes is not possible. A leaf without a node, as occurs in Monstera or Philodendron, may sometimes form roots but will not sprout a new stem. The result is a rooted but growth-stagnant plant.

Intact vs. Non-Intact Node

Not every node reliably sprouts. When taking cuttings or pruning a plant, you should first check if the node is still intact. A healthy node is firm, the surface slightly moist or at least not dried out. The color is green to light brown, depending on the plant species. An aerial root attachment or a visible bud is a good sign.

If there is no visible bud, it does not necessarily mean that the node is inactive. It can also be a dormant eye. This is a resting bud that only activates when a main shoot is cut or the plant experiences stress. Therefore, for propagation: When in doubt, it is better to cut a cutting with two nodes. If one fails, there is still a second chance.

Nodes in Different Plant Species

Nodes do not look the same in every plant. Almost all vascular plants have nodes, but the shape, size, and texture of the nodes differ depending on the species. In some plants, they are clearly visible and easy to find, while in others, they are barely recognizable or of little relevance for propagation. Knowing this helps to find them faster and cut more safely.

  • Monstera: Clearly thickened nodes, often with a visible leaf scar and aerial root attachment.
  • Philodendron: Somewhat less conspicuous but easily recognizable nodes with often visible buds. Climbing species also form fine clinging roots at the nodes.
  • Syngonium: Slender, closely spaced nodes, clearly recognizable where the petiole transitions into the stem. Aerial root attachments are also directly at the node here.
  • Alocasia: Short, stunted nodes, often enveloped by leaf remnants.

Some plants do not form a classic stem with visible nodes at all. Strelitzias, for example, grow from a pseudostem where the leaves emerge directly from the base. Plants with rhizomes, such as many ferns or ginger plants, also function according to a different principle. These plants therefore cannot be propagated by cuttings with nodes, but by dividing the rootstock.
