Are you discovering brown, black, or yellow spots on the leaves of your houseplant and wondering what's going on? Very likely, you're dealing with leaf spot disease: one of the most common fungal diseases in houseplants. The good news is that if you act early enough, the plant can usually be saved.

What is leaf spot disease?

Leaf spot disease is not a single disease but a collective term for various fungal and bacterial infections that manifest as spots on the leaves. In houseplants, it's almost exclusively fungal pathogens that cause the damage, especially from the genera Alternaria, Septoria, and Ascochyta. These fungi love moist, poorly ventilated conditions and spread through spores transmitted by water, air, or direct contact.

The disease itself is rarely an acute emergency, but a clear warning sign: if your plant develops leaf spots, something is wrong with its growing conditions. Left untreated, the infestation progressively weakens the plant, inhibits its photosynthesis, and in the worst case, can lead to the death of entire shoots.

Recognizing leaf spot disease: what the infestation looks like

Depending on the pathogen involved, the spots look different. This is important to know, as the damage pattern helps you identify the correct pathogen and act specifically.

Fungal leaf spot disease (most common form)

  • Alternaria (mold and sooty mold fungi): Small, sharply defined dark brown to black spots on the upper side of the leaf. Over time, they grow larger and merge. Spore beds form on the underside of the leaf.
  • Ascochyta (sac fungi): Elongated, brown spots with a grayish or light center, often dotted with small dark spots. Later, stems and shoots can also be affected.
  • Septoria (other sac fungi): More yellowish spots with a dark border. Typically, smaller spots merge until the entire leaf is affected.

Bacterial leaf spot disease (less common in houseplants)

Bacterial infections manifest as light yellow spots with a strikingly dark brown or blackish margin. The bacteria usually penetrate through injuries or natural leaf openings and are transmitted from leaf to leaf by watering or spraying. Important to know: There are no approved pesticides for home use for bacterial leaf spots. Here, only consistent removal of affected leaves and optimizing care conditions help.

Leaf spot disease vs. care errors: how to distinguish them

Not every spot on a leaf is a disease. Care errors such as waterlogging, sunburn, or limescale spots from hard tap water look similar at first glance. A few differences help with diagnosis:

  • Leaf spot disease: Spots often have a darker margin and spread over several leaves. A spore bed (dark dust) is sometimes visible on the underside of the leaf.
  • Sunburn: Light, bleached spots without a clear margin, usually on the side facing the light.
  • Limescale spots: Whitish, dry spots without a margin, appearing after spraying with hard tap water.
  • Waterlogging damage: Usually starts at the leaf base or tip, not in the middle of the leaf.

Causes of leaf spot disease

Leaf spot disease almost never arises without warning. As a rule, the plant has already been weakened before the fungi attack. These conditions favor an infestation:

  • Too much moisture on the leaves: Frequent spraying, watering from above, or consistently high humidity without sufficient air circulation are the most common triggers.
  • Waterlogging in the substrate: If the roots are constantly in moist substrate, the entire plant is weakened and more susceptible to fungal infections.
  • Poor air circulation: Densely packed plants, poorly ventilated rooms, or terrariums without regular airing create ideal conditions for fungal spores.
  • Watering with water that is too cold: Cold water creates temperature stress and weakens the leaf tissue, providing an entry point for fungi.
  • Too little light: Plants in too dark locations grow slower and are less resistant to pathogens.
  • Over-fertilization: Too much nitrogen makes the leaf tissue soft and more susceptible to infections.
  • Injuries to leaves or shoots: Especially for bacterial pathogens, injuries serve as a direct entry point.

Combating leaf spot disease

If you have identified leaf spot disease in one of your houseplants, quick action is required. The earlier you intervene, the better the chances of fully saving the plant.

  1. Isolate the plant immediately: Move the affected plant away from other houseplants. Fungal spores spread easily and can infect neighboring plants.
  2. Remove affected leaves: Cut off all leaves with spots with a disinfected pair of scissors, even those only slightly affected. Dispose of them in household waste, not in compost or organic waste, as fungal spores can survive there and continue to spread.
  3. Disinfect tools: Clean scissors and hands thoroughly after work to prevent transmission to other plants. Pure alcohol or a lighter are suitable for disinfecting cutting surfaces.
  4. Stop spraying the plant: Immediately cease all spraying of the leaves and from now on, only water directly at the roots.
  5. Start treatment: Treat with home remedies or a fungicide depending on the severity of the infestation (see next section).
  6. Adjust location and care: Optimize light, air circulation, and watering habits so that the conditions for the fungus do not recur.
  7. Check regularly: Intensively check the plant in the following weeks and immediately remove any new affected leaves.

Combating leaf spot disease with home remedies

For light to moderate infestations of fungal leaf spot disease, various home remedies can provide support. They do not replace a fungicide for severe infestations, but they can help in the early stages and stabilize the plant. Important: Home remedies are not effective against bacterial leaf spot disease.

Baking soda solution

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) changes the pH value on the leaf surface and inhibits the growth of many fungal spores. Mix 1 tsp baking soda with 1 liter of water and a few drops of vegetable oil (to help the solution adhere). Spray the affected leaves – and after removing the diseased leaves, also the remaining leaves – with this solution. Repeat every 5–7 days.

Garlic tea

Garlic contains allicin, a compound with proven antifungal properties. Chop 2–3 cloves of garlic, pour 1 liter of boiling water over them, and let the tea steep for 24 hours. Then strain and pour the solution into a spray bottle. Spray affected areas with it and repeat every 5 days.

Milk-water mixture

A mixture of one part whole milk and nine parts water can help inhibit fungal spores in the early stage. The effect is similar to fungicides against powdery mildew; for leaf spots, it is more limited but supportive. Spray directly onto affected areas and repeat weekly.

Horsetail tea

Horsetail contains silicic acid, which strengthens the plant's cell walls and makes it more resistant to fungal infections. As a preventive and supportive measure: Simmer 1 liter of water with 2–3 tablespoons of dried horsetail for 30 minutes, let cool, and use as a spray solution.

When home remedies are not enough

For severe infestations, when many leaves are affected or the spots spread quickly, home remedies are not sufficient. In this case, you should use a biological or chemical fungicide. Copper-containing fungicides (e.g., Bordeaux mixture) are well suited for indoor and balcony plants and are available in specialist shops.

Which houseplants are particularly susceptible?

In principle, leaf spot disease can affect almost any houseplant. However, some genera are considered particularly sensitive:

  • Monstera: Due to its large leaves and preference for high humidity, the Monstera is a frequent candidate.
  • Alocasia: Also moisture-loving and therefore susceptible, especially in poorly ventilated rooms.
  • Philodendron: Reacts to waterlogging and over-spraying with leaf spots.
  • Calathea and Maranta: Need high humidity but are therefore also more susceptible to fungal infections.
  • Rubber tree (Ficus elastica): Robust, but leaf spot disease can occur with incorrect care or cold watering.

Preventing leaf spot disease

The best treatment is the one you never need. With the right care measures, you significantly reduce the risk of leaf spot disease:

  • Water only at the roots: Always water directly into the substrate and never over the leaves. Pour off excess water from the saucer after 30 minutes.
  • Use room-temperature water: Cold tap water causes temperature stress. Let water warm up to room temperature before watering.
  • Ensure good air circulation: Do not place plants too close together and ventilate the room regularly, especially in damp areas like bathrooms.
  • Check leaves regularly: Look at the top and bottom of the leaves every time you care for them. Early detected spots can be easily removed before the fungus spreads.
  • Quarantine new plants: Keep new plants separate for 1–2 weeks before adding them to your collection. This prevents imported pathogens.
  • Right location: Bright, indirect light and sufficient warmth strengthen the plant and make it more resistant.
  • Do not over-fertilize: A balanced nutrient supply without excess nitrogen keeps the leaf tissue firm and less susceptible.
  • Horsetail tea as a cure: Regular treatment with horsetail tea (every 4 weeks) strengthens cell walls and acts preventively against fungal infections.
