The Maranta 'Silver Band', better known as the prayer plant, is a very popular and, above all, not so widespread Maranta species. The special thing about this species is that it prefers to grow in a hanging basket. If the growth gets out of control, it can easily be cut back. But don't throw away the cuttings, because the 'Lemon Lime' is very easy to propagate from cuttings.

    Care instructions

    Location

It is very important that your Maranta gets plenty of sunlight (e.g. from a west-facing window) so that the old leaves do not die after new ones have developed. In addition, the distinctive leaf pattern and coloration will regress if the plant is in too dark a place. However, they do not like direct sunlight. Your Maranta should also be in a warm place, but not near heaters.

    Temperature

Maranta plants are best kept at room temperatures of 18 - 30 degrees. At higher temperatures, make sure that the substrate does not dry out completely, which is often the case in summer.

    Watering

When watering, always make sure that you do not water too much; avoiding waterlogging is very important here. The Maranta is also very sensitive when it comes to overwatering the leaves; if the leaves are too wet, fungi often form, and this should be avoided. Depending on the season, the Maranta should be watered once a week or every two weeks. A permeable substrate is always an advantage here, as the remaining water drains away easily and waterlogging does not occur.

    Care

When caring for the plant, there are a few things to consider to ensure the plant has the easiest possible start in the home. The substrate should not dry out completely; only when the first 2-3 cm of the substrate are dry should you add more water. This will prevent waterlogging, which often leads to root rot. Unfortunately, the Maranta is also a bit of a vermin magnet, so it should be checked regularly for vermin (particularly thrips and mealybugs). Otherwise, however, they are very easy-care hanging plants.

    Humidity

A higher humidity of 55% - 75% has a positive effect on the growth and development of the leaves.
